Some time back I wrote about a study which stated that pregnant woman should avoid eating fish. But another recent study claims that women and specially those who are pregnant and nursing should include sea food in their diets. If not more, then at least twice in a week they must go for seafood and make their kids eat too.
William E. M. Lands, a retired Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Michigan and the University of Illinois, opine that “Not eating seafood is more harmful than eating it’
As an attempt to clear away the doubts regarding mercury present in fish that harms the babies...the study states that the payback of eating seafood is far more than the risks of the little bit of mercury present in the seafood. Also if women avoid eating fish like shark, swordfish, tilefish, king mackerel, tuna steaks and whale meat, till they deliver the baby and have stopped breast feeding then they are not at all putting their babies to any kind of risk. Women who are planning for pregnancy can stop taking these fish six months before hand.
There is evidence that ocean fish have an element called selenium, which neutralizes the effect of mercury...so there is no harm going in for the sea food diet.In fact there are studies that prove that eating fish leads to a better IQ level in infants and kids.
So, all those mothers who were avoiding the temptations for the mouth watering sea food till now, can go for the delicacies.
