How to Heal Bumps and Other Wounds at Home
Bumps, wounds, scrapes, cuts and bruises are very common among children, and an accident can happen at any time ; that is why parents must be prepared to treat bumps at home and other minor injuries that may occur.
It is very important to clarify that if the child loses consciousness due to a blow or fall, the child should go to the hospital immediately. These recommendations for treating bumps and wounds are for minor injuries and minor bumps.
Tips to Cure Bumps at Home
Bumps are an inflammation that occurs after a blow to the head; this blow causes the blood vessels to break, causing not only inflammation but also slight bleeding. It turns out that in the area of the head and forehead where bumps are most common, there is not much space between the skin and the skull; therefore, when the vessels break, blood quickly accumulates, thus causing the appearance of bumps.
Cold
Cold is the best ally to treat any bump, especially those painful and uncomfortable bumps. Always try to keep a cloth bag with ice in the freezer; when the bump occurs, press it with the cold bag for 15 minutes.
If a bump appears, this procedure should be repeated 8 times a day for at least 2 days. This helps reduce the inflammation. Most likely, it will appear and this will be evident almost immediately due to the speed with which blood accumulates in the injured area. This cold treatment will not prevent the bump from appearing, but it will help prevent it from getting bigger.
Never apply ice directly to the skin because you can burn it. It is best to wrap the ice in a cloth if you do not have a cloth bag of ice. Another option in an emergency is to use the bags you have in the freezer; for example, the bag of precooked vegetables or the one with French fries. The important thing is to keep the area cold to control the inflammation.
Creams or Ointments
Complement the treatment to cure bumps at home with anti-inflammatory creams or ointments; parents should be cautious and try to have a first aid kit at home to treat these cases. This first aid kit should not be without this type of creams or ointments for bumps that help reduce inflammation.
Ointments or creams with natural extracts are highly recommended, for example, arnica extract, calendula, lavender oil or aloe vera. Importantly, these topical remedies should not be used in case of an open wound. Menthol is also a great ally not only to treat inflammation but to reduce pain.
A home remedy for this type of bump is to crush or finely chop a bunch of parsley and mix it with a little butter to obtain a thick texture. Apply it to the bump or bruise.
Heat
Cold therapy is effective in the first few days to reduce swelling, then bruising will occur; in this case, home treatment is to apply hot water cloths to the area of the blow to reduce bruising. For best results, begin applying hot water cloths once 24 hours have passed after the fall or accident.
Treating Other Wounds at Home
Other types of wounds such as scrapes and cuts are also very common among children. In this case, when there is visible blood, the first thing to do is wash the wound; this will allow us to see how deep the wound was.
In the case of a minor scrape with only a little bleeding, it should be cleaned with soap and water, dried with gauze and an antiseptic applied. When it is a minor wound, it is not recommended to cover it or use bandages; it is best to leave the wound open to the air, unless it is an area of much friction.
On the contrary, if the wound bleeds a lot and is deeper, pressure should be applied to the wound with gauze for at least 5 minutes until the blood clots and the bleeding stops.
Then you should apply the antiseptic and protect the wound with gauze and adhesive tape. You should clean the wound every day. If it is necessary to reapply the gauze and adhesive tape, it should be new and clean. Ideally, the wound should be left open to the air.
